BU COM Alums & The Election

Updated: Oct 29, 2024

By Chloe McCarthy

Boston University is well known for producing outstanding communication professionals who go on to make significant impacts in the media world. Over just two short days, three different BU alumni each known for their unique platforms- Alex Cooper (CGS’15, COM’17), Bill Whitaker (GRS’74), Howard Stern (CGS’74, COM’76) all secured high-profile sit down interviews with the Democratic candidate for President and sitting vice President Kamala Harris. Who are these Boston University Alumni?

  • ●  Alex Cooper is a podcaster and creator best known for her podcast Call Her Daddy. Cooper has transformed her podcast from conversations of relationships and dating to a broader discussion now including celebrity interviews, discussions of personal experiences and career journeys.

  • ●  Bill Whitaker is a seasoned broadcast journalist and CBS news correspondent for 60 minutes. Whitaker has spent decades covering critical national and global events and news.

  • ●  Howard Stern is a leading broadcaster and media personality known for his uncensored style including his radio show The Howard Stern Show.

The interviewers, all who have different backgrounds in media, all provided different questions and insights in their conversations with Harris.

Copper admitted she had some initial hesitations on her decision to interview Harris but ultimately decided to go through with it because of her role as a woman and this opportunity to represent women’s perspectives. Cooper decided to focus her interview on discussing women’s reproductive rights and the women’s role in society.

During Bill Whitaker’s interview with Harris on 60 Minutes they covered multiple pressing issues. The two discussed an indepth look into the international and domestic challenges that are currently shaping the political scene. This discussion provided viewers with further valuable insight into Harris’s stance on foreign and domestic policies.

Howard Stern chose to tackle a bunch of different subjects during his interview with Harris focusing on the current political landscape and Harris’s campaign. Stern clearly pivoted from his typical uncensored radio persona to a more serious, professional interview style during his discussion with Harris.

The three different approaches Cooper, Whitaker and Stern took during their recent interviews provided further insight and exemplified the media’s role in fostering an understanding for the issues that shape the political landscape today.
