My public relations journey has been nothing short of unconventional, but it has led me exactly where I’m meant to be. Going into freshman year at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA, I was set to pursue a degree in sociology. Once I realized this was not for me, I briefly tried political science, then switched to economics. I was dedicated to mastering an economics degree and initially enjoyed it, but then I transferred to BU during the second semester of my sophomore year. Set to continue my economics education in Boston, I realized that by the day, my eagerness to attend lectures and discussions decreased. First semester at BU, I took COMCO101 as a Hub credit and felt attracted to the PR unit. That summer, I took CM215, filled out the COM transfer form, and haven't looked back since.
PR offers a unique intersection of creativity and professional strategy. It allows me to showcase my creative mind, whether it be through writing or graphic design, while fostering meaningful relationships, strengthening management skills, and contributing to an organization’s success. This was especially solidified during my CM215 summer class with Professor Laura Hannon. Although my experience pursuing PR is still in its early stages, I have learned so much through the resources and organizations BU has to offer. Joining COM as a junior, I felt overwhelmed and very behind. Thankfully, I found the COM career services to help me navigate courses, internships, and any relevant questions regarding my transition into COM. From the summer into the fall semester, I’ve had nearly ten meetings with COM advisors. In these meetings, we covered all things career, abroad, and personal.
Additionally, I have joined the PRSSA chapter here at BU and am part of the Digital Media and Blog Team, which is the reason why I get to share my story. Through guest speakers, resume workshops, or club activities/initiatives, PRSSA has fostered a welcoming environment and so many resources that I am grateful to have. I feel confident that I will succeed in my PR degree and look forward to the opportunities, events, and meaningful connections that lie ahead.
