Pursuing a PR major at Boston University

My experience pursuing a PR major strikes a refreshing balance between theory and practical experience: yes, there are readings on media and communication models, but you’re also writing real press releases, handling simulated PR crises, and collaborating with local clients in classes like PRLab.
Public Relations major at BU is first and foremost about writing — sometimes for the press, sometimes for social media, and always for an audience that’s shifting and unpredictable. I never expected to enjoy drafting blog content or news releases as much as I do now. There’s something satisfying about seeing your words shape someone else’s perception or spark a conversation. The feedback is constant and constructive: professors push you to clarify ideas, classmates challenge you to rethink your messaging, and occasionally, those mock client presentations feel like actual job pitches.
Collaboration is at the center of the experience here. Most major projects happen in groups, so you learn quickly who’s a spreadsheet genius, who’s a design whiz, and who always delivers under pressure. Sometimes it’s messy — schedules clash and opinions differ — but brainstorming sessions are where creative solutions emerge. Professors and guest speakers go out of their way to connect you with alumni and industry professionals, and networking events are genuinely helpful, not just resume fillers.
What I think sets BU apart isn’t just its national ranking or access to top faculty — it’s the way you’re encouraged to step outside your comfort zone. I started as a freshman intimidated by the idea of “real-world PR,” yet after a few semesters, pitching campaign ideas, and managing deadlines, I’m more confident in both my communication skills and my adaptability.
PR major at BU isn’t always easy, but if you lean in, collaborate, and embrace the chaos, it’s incredibly rewarding. Every day, you learn something new about yourself — and about the fascinating world of strategic communication.
